Tucson Man Killed While Changing Tire in Fiery I-19 Crash Near San Xavier Mission

TUCSON, Ariz. – A tragic collision on Interstate 19 near San Xavier Mission claimed the life of a Tucson man.

The 60-year-old guy was struck and murdered by an older female driver while changing a tire on a damaged vehicle.

Emergency personnel reacted to reports of a severe crash on I-19 northbound near Milepost 56.

The incident featured many cars, one of which caught fire, and there was a risk of ejection.

Battalion 231 was the first to arrive and reported considerable smoke as they entered I-19 southbound.

To manage the situation, additional resources were brought in, including an ambulance and a fire vehicle.

Responders found one automobile on fire, another with major front-end damage, and two cars on their sides with people trapped inside.

Crews worked to put out the fire and liberate those trapped.

“One person was confirmed dead at the scene,” officials reported.

Two passengers, including the at-fault motorist, were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Three others were brought to local hospitals for evaluation, and one refused further treatment.

The Arizona Department of Transportation assisted by blocking I-19 northbound at Papago Road and diverting traffic to Pima Mine Road.

The Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.
