I admit it: going to Ikea is one of the worst ways I can think of to spend my time. And there is something even worse. Realizing when you got home that what you had bought after spending the afternoon there did not look as you had imagined. To solve this, the Swedish company launched an augmented reality tool that allowed you to see how your furniture looked in your home. And now it has gone even further: its app can even erase your old furniture with a stroke of the pen.
Until now, if you wanted to do things right and see how Ikea products could look in your living room, you had to do it the old-fashioned way: remove the furniture by hand and then go to the Ikea app to show you the replicas in 3D of those furniture. But now you don’t have to go through that extra step anymore thanks to a new tool called Ikea Kreativ.
This tool can scan any room in your house taking advantage of LiDAR technology from your iPhoneand then remove the furniture thanks to its artificial intelligence system, courtesy of Geomagical Labs. If your iPhone does not have this technology, nothing happens. You can upload a series of photos of the room from the page itself Ikea’s website and an image will be generated where you can interact with the 3D replicas of the furniture. It will not be as immersive as seeing them through augmented reality, but it will serve you just the same. Ikea also ensures that this summer it will implement the same tool for Android mobiles.
Oh, and if you’re not convinced to see how the furniture looks in your own home, you can always try your luck with the new virtual showrooms that Ikea Kreativ has created, from where you can play however you want with the items in the Ikea catalogue.
