All attention is focused on a possible large earthquake in Istanbul… Japanese earthquake expert, Chief Civil Engineer Yoshinori Moriwaki, who conducted assessments on this issue, listed the 7 most risky areas and said: “The earthquake is coming. It can happen in 1 year.” , 1 month or even 1 week later.”
“HERE IS SOFT SOIL”
Saying that the strength of a possible Istanbul quake could be between 7.6 and 7.9, Yoshinori Moriwaki said, “The earthquake is coming. It can happen in a year, in a month or even in a week. The highest risk regions are: Ataturk Airport, Zeytinburnu, Küçükçekmece, Avcilar, Buyukçekmece and Fatih. There are also soft floors. On the Anatolian side, in Tuzla, Pendik and on the coastal side,” he said.
“THE BUILDINGS WILL BE BIG DAMAGE”
Claiming that a similar scenario was seen in the 1999 earthquake, Moriwaki said: “We saw it in the 99 magnitude earthquake. There was a strong concussion here. If the ground is soft, that’s a problem. Hatay is bad. “Why? Because the ground is soft. These buildings are attached, and they were all built before the year 2000. “These buildings will suffer a lot of damage,” he said.
A CALL FOR URBAN TRANSFORMATION
Reiterating his call for urban transformation in the continuation of his statement, Moriwaki said, “Urban transformation is urgently needed. Both the Vice President and the Minister of the Environment have spoken about this, it needs to be done urgently.”
