The best game remakes of all time

Remakes are once again a hot topic in the current generation of video games. The Last of Us Part 1 received a new version of this type this year, although the meaning of this installment was controversial.

Fans, on the other hand, are excited about The Witcher remake, which CD Projekt Red has now announced.

Reissues are an ideal way to revive a classic, or make it accessible to a whole new group of players. Some manage to improve on the original in just the right places, making it the preferred version of the game. In the following list, you will find the top ten game remakes of all time, which skillfully address these aspects.

01

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Good. In theory, it is not a simple remake in the classic sense. It takes liberties in many places to shape the story of the original into something new. This new plot line continues in the sequels to Final Fantasy VII Remake. However, this title offers both FF7 newcomers and veterans a rewarding gaming experience at the same time.

The Final Fantasy VII spin-off for PSP, Crisis Core, will also receive a new edition as part of the remake universe. It will be released as Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reuinon for PlayStation 4 and 5.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is also available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It also launched for PC this year.

Resident Evil (GameCube)

Meanwhile, the Resident Evil series has a long history of high-quality remakes under its belt. Currently, parts two and three have been re-released on current platforms and Resident Evil 4 is in development.

The start of this trend was Resident Evil for the Gamecube. It is a completely rebuilt version of the PlayStation original. Like the original, the title is based on pre-rendered backgrounds (graphical representation). This ensures that the game still looks good today. At that time, it was a real bomb from a visual point of view. And the remake also offered some innovations in terms of gameplay. For example, the whole story around Lisa Trevor.

03

Demon’s Souls (PlayStation 5)

It is true that many From Software fans are waiting for a remake (or at least a 60 FPS remaster) of the PlayStation 4 game Bloodborne. However, they were first offered a remake of the Demon’s Souls PS3 game. The game was a launch title for the PlayStation 5 and offered some features that made the already somewhat dated original much more accessible.

The team behind the remake is Bluepoint Games. They are also responsible for the great Shadow of the Colossus remake, which also came out on the PlayStation.

05

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Nintendo Switch)

There are already three Zelda remakes in total. Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask 3D have been released on the Nintendo 3DS. Although these have the advantage of being much easier to play than the Nintendo 64 versions, fans have been especially disappointed by the changes to the gameplay in Majora’s Mask.

Instead, the new version of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening has received much praise. In principle, it is a 1:1 conversion of the Gameboy game. However, it has been visually improved and given a nice tilt-shift look. Additionally, the title received an extra mode in the form of Dungeon Maker.
