This 2022 has been the year in which the fall from grace of Facebook, the popularity of TikTok and the BeReal revolution have been consolidated. The fact that the latter is the application of the year for iPhone, according to the Apple App Store, and the favorite of Android users is no coincidence: it arrived as the anti-social network, a response to the fatigue of Instagram users in the face of continued posturing and photographic filters.
Although in Spain the use of BeReal is not as massive as that of Instagram or TikTok, it has been the most downloaded application on iPhone for a good part of the year. Even TikTok wanted to follow its trend and launched TikTok Now in September, a platform with which it came to offer commissions to users for downloading it, and thus face the unstoppable advance of its competitor.
BeReal has not only led the lists in the App Store, but the California company itself has given it its award for the best application of 2022.
This has not been the case of the Google application store, the Play Store, which has awarded the WOMBO application in this way, with which images and art can be created with artificial intelligence. However, users have chosen BeReal as their favorite application.
On iPhone, 2022 has been dominated by social networks and streaming services: WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram and Telegram have joined BeReal as the most downloaded platforms and HBO Max, Netflix, Spotify and YouTube have led series playback , movies, music and videos. But Google services have also been important for users: Maps, the search engine itself, Gmail and Drive.
Online shopping, which has only gained ground since the covid-19 pandemic, has occupied an important place in downloads: SHEIN, Glovo, Wallapop and the McDonald’s app have been at the forefront in this area.
After taking stock of the last 12 months, Apple has rewarded various developers for the cultural impact of their applications: from one that seeks to help the user’s emotional well-being and help identify their emotions, to another for reminders and goals to drink water at throughout the day.
Google has also awarded some wellness applications, such as The STIGMA, which tries to normalize conversations about mental health and create safe spaces for it; Breathwrk, to perform breathing exercises; Recover Athletics, focused on the recovery of athletes; DanceFitme, which contains exercise routines, or Gym Log & Workouts.
In the field of games, the best of the year for both Android and iOS has been Apex Legends Mobile, chosen as such by users and companies, and which is the classic immersive universe of battles, strategy and shootouts. Google has also awarded Dislyte, an urban mythological role-playing video game, and Papers, Please for its history, a dystopian document control thriller.
On iPhone the already classics have been among the most downloaded Hay Day, Subway Surfers, Among Us!, Trivia Crack Y Candy Crush SagaWithout forget Minecraft and even Pou, Monopoly and some version of ludo. It has also been very popular Stumble Guys, for both iOS and Android, a multiplayer elimination game in which up to 32 users can compete. At Google, following the FIFA World Cup, the official game of the competition has also led downloads.
