Severe Weather Damages Plane, Downs Trees and Power Lines in Broward County

A powerful weather system caused damage in southern Broward County, lifting a light plane at North Perry Airport and downing trees on Friday evening. Pembroke Pines police said that the strong weather affected the region between Palm and Northwest 72nd avenues, near Pines Boulevard.

The agency described the storm as an apparent “small tornado,” however, meteorologists from the Local 10 Weather Authority confirmed no tornado existed.

“Several electrical wires and trees have been downed, and power may be temporarily disrupted for some homes,” Pembroke Pines Police Department spokesperson Amanda Conwell wrote in an email to local media sites. “An aeroplane was damaged at North Perry Airport, resulting in a brief gas leak. There have been no recorded storm-related injuries.

Meanwhile, Miramar police reported “downed power lines and storm-related damage” in the 2700 block of Sunshine Boulevard.

“It sucks not only for me but for the others around here because that’s his shed and we have live wires down here,” Joana Klaiss, a neighbour, said.

There were no injuries reported, but Sunshine Boulevard was temporarily stopped while crews cleaned up.
