Peugeot e-3008 (2023). Details about the new STLA Medium platform

Exclusive. Briefly presented in July, the new STLA Medium platform did not reveal all its secrets. Argus representatives met with Sebastien Jacquet, project manager at Stellantis Engineering, who spoke in detail about the creation of the electric and hybrid Peugeot 3008.

Presented on September 12, the Peugeot e-3008 will form the basis of the STLA Medium platform.

Oufti design – L’argus

Little return. In July 2020, the PSA group lifted the curtain on its upcoming electric platform called e-VMP. (Modular Electric Vehicle Platform) announced in 2023 for a compact SUV (3008, e-P64). It was announced that it was developed from the EMP2 and had power up to 250 kW (340 hp) in two- and all-wheel drive versions, and the batteries could contain from 60 to 100 kWh, i.e. a range of 400 to 650 km. Exactly three years later, we see the STLA environment, about which Stellaantis didn’t go into much detail. For L’Argus, Sebastien Jacquet, who leads the development of the group under Ned Couric, agreed to answer our questions.

Revised Specifications

The STLA Medium will have an 87 kWh battery and a so-called 98 usable kWh (104 kWh) output.

On paper, the characteristics of the two platforms seem close. And still… “STLA Medium is very different from e-VMP as the latter was designed according to European specifications and was not compatible with the products of the FCA group, in particular the American one” Sebastien Jacquet says “The birth of Stellantis in 2021 has made a difference with the integration of new brands representing different engines and performance. Therefore, STLA Medium had to be completely redone.”. in detail, “the central part around the battery has been completely redesigned”. Specifications include a 98kWh battery at the minimum length provided for this platform (4.30m), “it’s a feat” recognized as the project manager. Consequently, the multi-link rear axle was redesigned to accommodate this hydraulic accumulator. Another novelty of the project, STLA Medium must meet American crash test standards. in particular, the “Little Overlap”, which required reinforcement of the front and A-pillar (at the level of the windshield), clarifies Sébastien Jacquet. From EMP2, we have kept the interface points with rockers on assembly lines so as not to modify the industrial tool.

No compromise on electricity.

The upcoming Opel Manta crossover coupe (here in a concept car) will be based on the STLA Medium. It will be made in Italy in Melfi in 2025.

This base can be adapted to models that are approximately 4.30 m to 4.90 m long, with a wheelbase of 2.70 to 2.90 m and a ground clearance that can be up to 22 cm. According to the technical manager, STLA Medium is dedicated to two automotive programs. Initially, these were SUVs of the C and D segments, namely the new Peugeot 3008 and 5008 (2024), Opel Grandland (2024), Citroën C5 Aircross (2025), DS7 II (2025), Jeep Compass ( 2025) and Lancia Gamma (2026). C/D crossovers will follow, namely DS8 (2024) and Opel Manta (2025), as well as Alfa romeo Giulietta, DS4, Lancia Delta, Opel Astra, Peugeot 308 replacements from 2028, according to our information. Although it is also a multi-energy (1.2 mild hybrid and 1.6 plug-in hybrid), STLA Medium was designed for electric vehicles without compromise. insists Sebastien Jacquet.

Two types of batteries and cells

In terms of performance, the STLA Medium will be offered from 218 to 388 hp. for the all-wheel drive version. In this range, there should be room for different options depending on the car and especially its segment. Thus, the 4×4 version with 388 hp. SUVs of the group’s premium brands will be equipped. The engine will be an M2, designed and manufactured in Metz-Tremery by the joint venture Emotors (PSA-Nidec), one of the features of which is its efficiency (14 kWh/100 km).

Designed for an electric car, this technical base will receive engines with power from 218 hp. up to 388 hp for the twin engine version.

stellantis

The Stellantis Group has announced two types of batteries: the Standard package with 87 kWh and the Performance package (98 useful kWh).. If the e-VMP project called for a small battery with a capacity of 60 kWh, it was not ultimately chosen, confirms Sébastien Jacquet. In terms of chemistry, the two batteries will use Lithium-Ion (NMC) batteries with minimal cobalt content, but each will have different cells. The project manager specifies that if the battery pack produced in Mulhouse is unique, he will be able to get “two types of more or less tall cells”. No vendor details. So, according to our sources, we should look for BYD and ACC (Stellantis/Mercedes/Total-Saft) batteries. In terms of autonomy, Peugeot claims a range of 700 km, which should match the Performance version. The latter should not arrive immediately for launch in March 2024. For a classic battery, autonomy should be about 550 km.

Mains 400 V

Ideal for fast charging the 800V architecture was not retained by Stellantis. However, Sebastien Jacquet clarifies: “Our platform is predisposed and in the US it will pass very quickly”. Why not in Europe? “The 800V has a price issue and does not work with 400V chargers. We have looked into adding a specific box, but that adds a few hundred euros to the price. Another problem is that there are not enough 800V chargers in Europe and the savings in minutes per charge is not impressive.”. Stellantis speeds up reloading from 20% to 80% in 27 minutes with the Supercharger.

No software architecture revolution for the Peugeot 3008. Hidden behind the new i-cockpit is an upgraded 308 system.

Peugeot

If the Peugeot 3008 introduces the new panoramic i-cockpit, the software platform will be the same as the 308 and 408, but “with changes” Sebastien Jacquet adds. “Currently, over-the-air (OTA) updates focus on infotainment systems and connectivity. In STLA Medium, it will be the same with “electric machine, traction chain and ADAS (driving aids)”.. Stellantis is preparing a new architecture called STLA Brain, which Alfa Romeo says will be introduced in 2025 (on the Stelvio II). “STLA Medium will change in Phase 2 because our goal is to sell software to our customers”. The presentation of the new 3008 on September 12 will provide the final clarifications on this platform, which, as our interlocutor says “will be scalable”.
