PIKE COUNTY, Ala. (WDNews) – More than 100 neglected dogs and cats were reportedly rescued from a rural home near the Jack and Pike County line, according to The
Troy Messenger
.
The Troy Animal Rescue Project (TARP) responded after receiving a call from a friend of the homeowner, who said the woman had been hospitalized with cancer and could no longer care for her pets. While the caller believed there were around 15 animals inside, rescuers reportedly found more than 100 living in extreme filth.
Conditions inside the home were described as unbearable, with strong odors, urine-soaked furniture, and piles of feces. Some animals were reportedly hiding in the walls. Many of the dogs were suffering from severe infections, flea infestations, and untreated wounds. None had reportedly received proper veterinary care.
The homeowner remains hospitalized, and no charges have been filed at this time.
WDNews reached out to TARP for additional comments but was unable to reach anyone. Rescue efforts are ongoing as crews continue to care for the animals and clear the property.
TARP is now calling on the community for help, as their site is already at over-capacity before this ongoing search and rescue process happened.
In an effort to help place rescued animals into loving homes and free up space in the shelter, the Troy Animal Rescue Project will be holding an Adoption Clinic this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tractor Supply in Troy.
