Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp announced on Tuesday that it had suspended operations in Japan due to a computer system failure. The company said it is not known when production will resume, according to the BBC and Kyodo, which have come under the control of Agerpres.
Work has been suspended at all 14 of the group’s plants, including the Miyata plant in Fukuoka prefecture and the Daihatsu Motor division in Kyoto, two plants that were not affected this morning will also be suspended this afternoon.
The accident is being investigated by Toyota, but it is unlikely that it was caused by a cyberattack, the world’s largest automaker by sales said.
Factories using the same system were unable to process orders for auto parts on Tuesday morning. Factories in Miyata and Kyoto filled orders before failure.
In March 2022, Toyota closed all facilities in Japan after its Japanese supplier Kojima Industries Corp suffered a computer system failure caused by a cyberattack. At that time, it was not possible to manufacture about 13,000 cars.
A total of 14 plants in Japan account for about a third of Toyota’s global production.
The Toyota Group is committed to a just-in-time manufacturing system that keeps costs low, but may be vulnerable to various problems if the supply of automotive components is disrupted.
