According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one individual died in an early Wednesday morning incident on Interstate 26.
Master Trooper William Bennett said that the two-vehicle incident occurred around 3:05 a.m. on a stretch of I-26 in Calhoun County.
According to Bennett, the incident occurred on the eastbound side of I-26 around mile marker 122. A 1983 Mack truck and a 2020 Toyota sedan were going east on I-26 when the automobile collided with the truck’s rear, according to Bennett.
According to Bennett, the Toyota driver was the only person in the car and died at the spot. The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has not officially identified the Toyota driver.
Bennett said the truck driver, the only person in the vehicle, was unharmed, and no further injuries were recorded.
There was no information on whether either driver wore a seat belt.
The cause of the car’s collision with the back of the truck was unknown, but the Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
According to the state Department of Public Safety, 278 people have died on South Carolina roadways as of Sunday in 2025. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, at least 948 persons were killed in collisions last year.
According to DPS data, this is the first fatal crash in Calhoun County in 2025. DPS reported six deaths in the county in 2024.
