Massacre in Celaya: at least 11 dead in attack on two bars and a hotel in central Mexico | News Univision Latin America

At least 11 people, eight of them women, were killed and five others were injured in an armed attack on two bars and a hotel in the city of CelayaGuanajuato, central Mexico.

The attack happened around 10 p.m. According to witnesses cited by Televisa, to the place, in the neighborhood of Lindavista, arrived up to 15 armed men aboard three vans. They completed the attack in a coordinated manner in one minute.

According to local media reports, a group entered the reception of the Gala Hotel and the others to two nearby bars, shooting at everyone in their path. They then doused the bars with gasoline and set them on fire.

The first emergency services on the scene put out the flames and initially reported ten dead. Later, the eleventh death was confirmed, a woman who was being treated by health personnel.

In addition to the eight women and three men who died, five wounded were reported and taken to different hospitals in the town, located 160 miles (260 km) north of Mexico City.

In the place, which was taken by members of the National Guard, the Army and the state and municipal police, more than 80 shell casings of different caliber were found.

Cardboards were also found with messages from a well-known criminal group that implied that it was an attack related to the rivalry of two cartels that have been fighting for years for control of organized crime in Guanajuato.

The police confirmed the existence of these messages but did not want to reveal their content. According to AP, photos uploaded to social networks suggest that they were hit men from the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, dedicated mainly to huachicoleo (gasoline theft), accusing the owners of the bar of supporting the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Guanajuato, the second state with the most homicides in Mexico

The Secretary of the Government of Guanajuato, Libya Garciaexpressed his condemnation of the facts, of which he did not offer details.

“We will be giving timely follow-up and working closely and in coordination with the authorities of the Municipality of Celaya, FGE Guanajuato (the State Attorney General’s Office), as well as the Federal authorities so that those responsible are found and justice is done,” he wrote. in their networks, cites the Agencia Efe.

Since 2018, the state of Guanajuato, the sixth most populous in Mexico, has been in the first places with the highest number of murders in the country. This same week, the Secretary of Security of the Government of Mexico placed it in second place nationally with 993 intentional homicides in the first quarter of the year. In 2021, it registered 3,516 intentional homicides, according to official figures.

According to local authorities, nine out of 10 murders have some link to organized crime.

Mexico registered 33,308 homicides in 2021 after the two most violent years in its history, under the mandate of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with 34,690 in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.

The Secretary of Security reported this Monday a total of 9,895 homicide victims nationwide in the first quarter of 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 12.3%.
