In the junior competition, Latvia will be represented by last year’s European vice-champions in the U-17 group, Toms Markus Salnais, Janis Censonis, Edwards Egle and Christians Artis Pastors.
Latvians take fourth place in the tournament and start in subgroup D, where tomorrow at 20:20 their opponents will be the national team of Kyrgyzstan, and at 22:10 – Indian basketball players. On Friday, September 1, at 18:30, the Latvian youth team will meet with Ukraine, and at 20:45 – with Israel. The winners of the first two places in the subgroup will compete for medals in the qualifying tournament on Sunday, September 3rd. In the quarter-finals, the best teams from group D will face the first and second place winners of subgroup B (Brazil, Estonia, Morocco, Serbia and Slovenia).
In the girls’ competition, Latvia will be represented by Amanda Baumgarte, Elina Briede, Annija Brenz and Katrina Miller. The Latvians are in 14th place and will play in subgroup A. On Thursday, August 31, at 13:55 they will play with the team of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and at 17:10 – with the Egyptian basketball players. On the other hand, on Saturday, September 2, at 13:55 there will be a meeting with Tunisia, and at 15:45 – with the Chile national team. In the quarter-finals on Sunday, September 3, the top two teams in subgroup A will play the best teams in group C (Japan, Lithuania, Morocco, Spain, Ukraine).
At the World Under-18 Championship, the best achievements of Latvian basketball players so far are fifth place among boys in 2022 and sixth place among girls in 2021.
