The salary of a virtual assistant will depend on the skills they can offer, those who know software programming are the ones who earn the most
Do you want to be a Virtual Assistant? Since May 2021, Google searches for this new job have skyrocketed, at the same time that remote work has grown after the global health crisis. It is the job with the highest current demand in the digital worldwhich navigates between the responsibilities of a traditional secretary to functions of customer service, technology and marketing.
the dominican Julia Chilin (@giuliachilin) is a Virtual Assistant since 2020a job that he came to as a result of the need to reinvent himself when he lost his job in Morocco. “She was looking for how to make money online. My first job was as a transcriptionist”, she recalls in an interview with Yahoo Finance.
Trained in Hotel Administration at the Iberoamerican University of Cap CanaChilin was part of the food and beverage coordination for a Moroccan hotel. “I discovered platforms for remote work. I started reading the vacancies that were available and I saw a pattern in the offers. E-commerce stores that were looking for virtual assistants,” she says.

His first contract was obtained with a company that sold saunas, his responsibilities ranged from virtually serving customers to writing the descriptions of the products that were offered on the web. “They gave me the opportunity with no experience. I made like $100 in a month, hardly anything, but I decided that’s what I wanted to do.”.
His thing was training. chillin he knew that his income level would vary according to the skills he could offer to clients. “I did a lot of courses on Coursera. I even created an online store to understand how it works inside. I never made a sale, but from there I saw how I could help people,” she says.
With her training in hospitality, she was able to demonstrate her ability to serve clients in person. “I sold it as a quality that I can use for the benefit of online stores,” she says. Also his command of English. All this adds up when it comes to getting offers and assessing the price of your work.
“I started out charging $5 an hour,” Chilin recalls. A figure that increased – first to $8 and then to $10 – as she gained experience and new skills. Today her work is quoted at $25. “I got to earn $3,000 a month, but working 12 hours a day. That’s not healthy”.

The virtual assistants that charge the most in the market are those that focus on software programming, who can quote up to 50 dollars an hour of work. “You are going to increase according to what you learn,” says Chilin.
The job market is more focused on the United States and Europe, although as remote work it breaks geographical boundaries. Companies in the region are just beginning to demand virtual assistants, according to Chilin’s experience. “He is focused more on the marketing area, because most of the businesses that are born in Latin America have an Instagram before a web page. Now there seems to be a growth in that sense.”
“This is not a one-task job. There are many tasks together, it is a bit of everything”. Within attendee profiles there is also one who is more dedicated to administrative work, with functions similar to those of a traditional secretary: answer emails and keep agenda.
chillin suggests establishing a job niche if you want to get a job as an assistant, to be able to specialize in the area. “I even learned how to create domains and make web pages, these are skills that I can now offer.” Also support yourself on websites that work as job boards, such as freelancer.es and upwork.com.

The latter is Chilin’s favorite, as it offers greater security to guarantee the employer’s payment. The platform has a built-in tracking that takes the work time, and sends screenshots to the client to record that they are actually performing your duties.
“One begins with the fear of knowing if they are going to pay you. The platform I started ignored that part, ”she recalls, although he warns that in cases like Upwork, the website charges a commission for the work. “You have to be creative, they look for a contact. Take the risk to offer the service. The job won’t come until you make yourself known. The worst thing that’s going to happen to you is that they tell you no, until you keep playing hard”.
