Frontier Airlines (NASDAQ: ULCC) announced Tuesday that it will expand its operations in Puerto Rico to add a new route between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla (BQN); and two new routes between the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (AILMM) in San Juan (SJU) and the cities of Boston, Massachusetts, and Hartford, Connecticut.
Frontier becomes the fourth airline to establish operations at Aguadilla Airport, which represents a new alternative for travelers between Florida and the west region of the Island. The route between MCO and BQN will operate three weekly flights per year, starting March 24, 2022.
The low-cost carrier will also begin operating a new route between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and SJU beginning February 17, 2022, with four weekly flights; and a route between Bradley International Airport in Hartford (BDL) and SJU beginning February 18, 2022, with three weekly flights.
“With the expansion of service to the Aguadilla Airport and new routes in San Juan, Frontier once again reaffirms its commitment to continue betting on Puerto Rico as a key destination in the Caribbean. This results in greater options for travelers between the island and the east coast of the United States ”, indicated the executive director of the CTPR, Carlos Mercado Santiago. “The start of operations of the airline in Aguadilla will significantly benefit the economy of the western region. According to our projections, with this route, which will operate throughout the year, an impact of about $ 3.9 million is estimated. On the other hand, the new routes between San Juan and the cities of Boston and Hartford represent a combined impact of about $ 26.9 million. This shows a sustained growth of air access in Puerto Rico, which is a priority for our governor, Pedro R. Pierluisi ”.
Likewise, the executive director of the Ports Authority, Joel Pizá Batiz, said that “we congratulate Frontier airline for its vision of growth, expansion of services and offers for Puerto Rico, especially for the western region. Without a doubt, we continue to approach a total recovery of air access, which is very important for the economic development for which we are and continue working ”.
For his part, Alfredo González, Manager of Domestic and International Sales for Frontier Airlines, said that “we are very happy with the announcement of Aguadilla as our new destination with nonstop flights from the city of Orlando that begins in March 2022. This new flight will allow thousands of tourists the opportunity to enjoy the diversity and beauty of Isla del Encanto and will provide an alternative for the local community to travel easily and economically to Florida and through an extensive network of routes ”.
Frontier, based in Denver, Colorado, began operations in Puerto Rico in June 2017. The company operates more than 100 aircraft in the Airbus A320 family, and has the largest number of A320neo in the United States. Frontier’s emphasis is on more than low fares: the airline gives the passenger the ability to customize their trip based on their needs and budget.
