On Thursday, a 23-year-old man appeared in court in Miami-Dade County, accused of driving drunk when he wrecked and killed a teenage boy.
Deputies say surveillance video shows Bryan Baez and 14-year-old Yansay Delgado leaving an apartment complex in the Naranja neighborhood only two minutes before the crash on April 12.
Baez, also known as Bryan Arturo Baez Martinez, was driving a gray 2006 Ford Escape without a Florida license plate shortly after 9:30 p.m., with Yansay riding in the front seat, according to authorities.
According to authorities, Baez was speeding when his gray Ford Escape skidded more than 220 feet, collided with a guardrail, overturned onto its roof, and came to a halt on Naranja Lakes Boulevard.
According to deputies, the force of the impact propelled Yansay, who was not wearing a seatbelt, through the front window, where his head struck the guardrail, and fire rescue workers pronounced him dead on the site.
According to the arrest report, Baez had red bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage,” according to the responding deputies.
According to the arrest record, Baez drove “while intoxicated and at a recklessly high rate of speed at night,” according to the deputy.
Deputies captured Baez, who was born in Cuba and lived in Naranja, soon before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, and he was lodged into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 7:40 p.m.
According to inmate records, Baez was under a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.
