Coyotes have recently been responsible for the attacks on two dogs, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife is advising residents and visitors of Colorado Springs to be mindful of their presence.
Near Palmer Park and Rockrimmon Open Space, wildlife officers said that the dogs were accompanied by their owners and were wearing leashes that were six feet long.
It has been observed that while coyotes are in the process of giving birth to new pups, they have the potential to become hostile against any perceived dangers to their offspring.
CPW reports that the puppies are normally born in the month of February, and that coyotes continue to nurture the pups in their dens until the month of June.
The officials in charge of wildlife recommended owners to keep their pets on a leash whether they were going on walks, staying indoors at night, or being confined in kennels.
