Car Hits Deer, Crashes Into Home in Derry Township — Driver Injured, House Deemed Unsafe

On Thursday morning, a vehicle struck a deer before colliding with a residence in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, according to officials.

The incident occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. on Route 22’s 9700 block. Firefighters suspect the driver lost control after hitting a deer.

“Because there is a massive barrier here, they are jumping it. So if you come along and can’t see a deer in midair, they’re going to hit you in midair,” Derry Township Fire Chief Mark Piatine explained.

The driver was able to get out of the automobile on his own. He was transported to the hospital for treatment of a wound on his head.

The event occurred inside the home, where two people were present. They did not sustain any injuries.

“My mom was in the living room, and they heard a loud crash and a car came through their kitchen window,” she added.

“Normally, she’s in the kitchen making coffee or breakfast,” Perla stated shortly thereafter. “Something kept her out of the kitchen and in the living room for a little bit longer than normal.”

Crews removed the automobile with a forklift. The home was severely damaged and is currently rated structurally unsafe.

The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash’s cause.
