This post comes after Bukele blamed “old enemies” for allying with “new dark forces and external financing” to drive the rise in homicides in the country.

The statements were accompanied by the image of an alleged confiscation of “a large sum of money” from criminal groups. This, however, belongs to a seizure made by the National Civil Police (PNC) of a gang of kidnappers who collected a ransom for an elderly person.
Along the same lines, the New Ideas deputies blame opponents for being behind the rise in homicides. It is not the first time that Bukele has attributed atypical rises in homicides to his opponents or political detractors.
In June 2019, he asked the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to investigate “two senior leaders” of the FMLN for, allegedly, finance gangs to attack police officers and destabilize their government. No arrests were reported and no formal investigation was launched following these statements.
