(CNN) – Steve Bannon, a former adviser to then-President Trump, arrived at the FBI’s Washington field office on Monday to turn himself in after being charged with criminal contempt on Friday.
Bannon was defiant when addressing the television cameras, saying, “We are going to end the Biden regime.”
Bannon is expected to have a first appearance in federal court on Monday afternoon.
Before turning himself in, Bannon went live on social media to tell his followers to “stay focused.”
“I don’t want anyone to take their eyes off what we do every day, okay?” Bannon told a camera on his “WarRoom” online show.
The 67-year-old man was charged with one count related to his refusal to appear for a deposition and another for failing to produce documents in connection with the House Select Committee investigation into the January 6 insurrection in the US Capitol. .
Bannon went on to say, “We have Hispanics on our side, blacks on our side. We are bringing down the Biden regime every day.”
“I want you to focus on the message,” Bannon said before entering the FBI office. “Thank you”.
The Bannon indictment
On Friday, the US Department of Justice announced that a federal grand jury has indicted Bannon for contempt of Congress.
Attorney General Merrick Garland has been under enormous political pressure to impeach Bannon since the House referred Trump’s ally to the Justice Department for contempt on October 21.
Without an indictment, critics have said, there are doubts about the power of the commission investigating the January 6 assault to force former White House and Trump administration officials to cooperate.
On Friday, former White House Secretary General Mark Meadows did not appear for a deposition, sources familiar with the investigation told CNN, leading to a possible confrontation that could lead the panel to initiate criminal referral proceedings against him. .
