The sabotage attempt was foiled on Monday by Spanish police during the third leg of the Tour of Spain after four people tried to pour 400 liters of engine oil onto the road, according to the daily newspaper L’Equipe.

Four people were arrested in Catalonia as they were preparing to pour about 400 liters of a liquid similar to motor oil onto the 158.5 km La Vuelta Stage 3 track between Suria and Arinsal (Andorra).

A police source quoted by Agerpres said they were members of a group known as the CDR, which advocates Catalan independence. They had two tanks of 200 liters each, equipped with an activation device with a solenoid valve and a clock hidden in the vegetation around the bridge that the cyclists had to cross.

The police arrested the four, and the judge ordered their temporary release with a ban on approaching less than 500 meters from the Tour of Spain route.

Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel (Sudal), one of the favorites for this year’s Tour of Spain, won the third stage on Monday ahead of Dane Jonas Wingegaard (Jambo-Visma), winner of the Tour de France. and became the absolute leader.
