2022 is over. The end of the year arrived and with it, all the recounts of the best we saw in cinema and television throughout the year. But what about a marathon to say goodbye to this year properly and start 2023 off right?
Here we arm ourselves a short list with movies and series that have just been released on various streaming platformsOr, productions that have been there for a while, but this year received a bit of the recognition they deserve.
After a long time of waiting, finally premiered on the Netflix catalog White Noise, the latest film by Noah Baumbachwho gave us a few years ago the tragic and reflective Marriage Story along with Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. And it is with the latter that he meets again for this new tape.
White Noise introduces us to the teacher Jack Gladney, an expert on the history of Adolf Hitler (and embarrassed that he doesn’t speak German). He is married to Babbette, who has a family that includes four children. They live a normal and routine life like any other American family until an accident (release of toxic chemicals into the air), they force them to flee into the unknown. Sounds like the pandemic?
Driver shares cast with Greta Gerwig, who returns to acting after her two great directorial successes with Lady Bird Y little women. Gerwig and Drivers himself are regulars at Baumbach’s work, without forgetting that the filmmaker and actress are a couple in real life. White Noise has received mixed reviews, but it’s a film that, although it dies down towards the end, it’s worth seeing (especially since it’s going to play for awards season). HERE the first preview.
This is one of Star+’s hidden gems, considering that it hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. Starring Steve Carrell opposite Domhnall Gleeson, we first meet therapist Alan Strausswho seems to have a somewhat distant relationship with her daughter between short and somewhat awkward contacts.
And on the other side we meet Sam Fortner, a subject who contacts Dr. Strauss to start taking therapy. First, we see how Sam won’t give in to open up during sessions, which frustrates Dr. Strauss. And when he talks to her about the possibility of addressing more personal issues, the unexpected happens: Sam kidnaps Strauss and locks him (and chains) him in the basement of his house located in the middle of the woods.
The reason? Sam is a psycho, and he’s about to hurt someone, and he wants (or so he says) Dr. Strauss to help him stop. The dynamic between the two is extremely uncomfortable, and this increases with the strange presence of his mother. A crazy series in episodes of less than 30 minutes.
Bergman Island it was one of the standout movies of 2021courtesy of the always great Mia Hansen-Love in a love story to the cinema, to Ingmar Bergman, and to the thousands of stories that arise from the love that two people can feel (either friendship or on a romantic level). In a nutshell, it is a film about the situations that inspire them.
The film stars Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth, who give life to a couple of filmmakers who decide to spend a few days at Bergman’s house on the famous island of Farö. He, an established director and screenwriter, is writing his next big project while she is barely looking for inspiration to throw her first script.
At the same time, we see uA love story that occurs between a couple of characters played by Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Liethus revealing the ideas that Chris has in his head and how they develop thanks to the landscape, history and their relationships.
The sex life of college girls
There are series that do not make much noise when they are released. But over time and between recommendations, they get bigger. We talk about Sex Lives of College Girls either The sex life of college girls where we see, just as a curious fact, Pauline Chalamet, Timothée’s sister.
Under the production of Mindy Kaling, here we continue to a group of college girls, four friends who meet on campuswho must overcome the world of studies and the complicated love life from which the educational system makes you decide: Either you work on your grades or you take the time to cry because your last attempt at a relationship didn’t work out.
The first season is interesting, we have to tell you. But It is the second installment of this 2022 that raised the stakes between comedy and the way in which they present serious issues that youth in general lives: sexual violence, competitive culture, climate change, racism, sexism and more.
Will Smith was, perhaps, the character who was most talked about this 2022 from an incident at the Oscars ceremony: he slapped Chris Rock tremendously in the middle of the stage after the comedian teased the baldness (due to alopecia) of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Later, He went back on stage but to receive the Oscar for Best Actor for his work in King Richard.
After an ovation and tears in his speech, came the hate. Will Smith was slightly canceled to the extent that some of his projects were put on hold. The actor went into seclusion and later returned to the public eye to apologize to the viewers, his fans, but above all to Chris Rock, who to date remains in a kind of silence regarding what happened.
And why do we remember this? because recently, Will Smith’s most recent film entitled emancipation which, they say, could give the rapper another Oscar nomination with a strong chance of winning the award. Is it right or wrong? It is already an individual response, but here we recommend them so that they are not left out of the conversation.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, emancipation is set in 1863 during the Emancipation Proclamation, which decreed the freeing of all slaves in the Confederate states. In other words, all citizens should have the same rights under the law.
Our protagonist is a slave named Peter better known as “Whipped Peter”who became famous from a painful photograph of his scarred back as a result of the whipping he received.
